Egg: The egg is as illustrated, with black pigment as scattered blotches along the body of the embryo (A). The oil globule has a light amber tint. The photograph is of the egg 18 hours post-fertilization.
Larva: The early larva (B) combines the triangle of black dots noted in P. gibbosus (KIIIC1), with 4 dots on the head and thorax, 1 on the oil globule, and 1 near the tip of the notochord. The 3-day larva has the characteristic white pigment patch in the dorsal finfold (C), but the pattern of both white and black pigment is distinctly different from the same age P. gibbosus larva (see KIIIC1 Plate E). B: 1 day, C: 3 days (25°C).
This egg has not knowingly been collected at sea, but while collecting fishes for DNA barcoding, three females and a male of this species were collected from a cloud of anthiines at the bow of a steel wreck in 25m water depth off Durban, on 28 December 2005. One of the females was in ripe running condition, and by gentle pressure, eggs were extruded from the body. These were placed in a bucket of seawater, and a drop of milt from the male, was added. Fertilization was successful, and a couple of eggs were hatched and reared to 3 days.
